Mooring balls in Rockport harbor. This was painted a month ago.
I was away on a surf trip a week ago, and came back to some spectacular weather. This week has been in the 40’s and sunny, with light wind. It’s definitely chilly enough to have to bundle up a bit, but I’ve been thrilled to be able to paint outside every day that I’ve been home. I’m doing a lot of 8×10 paintings; some quick sketches, and some are taking a lot of time and getting very resolved. It’s been exhausting working long days in the cold, but also rewarding. I’m excited about quite a few of these new paintings, and I’ll be getting photos of these new images to post here soon.

There is a 2 page article about me in the most recent issue of American Art Collector, the November ‘09 issue. If you get a chance to pick up a copy of the magazine you should check it out. It has several paintings I’ve done in New England, which are showing at the Addison Gallery right now.
A fruit cart in the jardin, the center of town. 8×10″
Sunset from the roof of the place where we stayed. I enjoyed going up to do quick studies of the sun going down in the evenings. 8×10″
These cactus are growing on Rancho Sol Dorado. I love the shape of the catus in the foreground with the mountains as a backdrop. 8×10″ I think I’ll use this one as a study for a larger painting this winter.
I was lost when I stumbled onto this street. It was a great place to paint. I like the old church tower with the modern power lines. It was a very steep street to set the easel up on. This is a bigger one at 24×18″
Frank took Dan Corey and I to the top of the hill where we painted this. It was a hell of a hike, but the view was worth it. The sun would poke through the clouds and light up different parts of the landscape while we worked. Frank did a great painting from up there. This one is 8×10″.
I have some other images I’ll be keeping to do paintings from, and others will be at the showat Addison Gallery, or the Cape Cod Museum of Art. The last two of these images, along with a few others can be seen at my friend Frank’s gallery, Galeria Gardner in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Last year 12 artists got together in Port Clyde, Maine. We had a great time painting together so this year we decided to do it again in Mexico, where one of the artists, Frank Gardner, lives. Frank arranged an AMAZING trip for us, and this year there were 15 of us. Some of these photos have already been posted on Facebook, but I thought I would do a little story of the trip through photos on this journal.
Frank dragged me through all kinds of trouble to get out into the field with these corn stalks. It wasn’t much easier trying to get back to the car the “easy” way.
Frank working on his painting that day. He looks much more serious than he was.
This day we all rode horses down into the canyon and through a river at the bottom. It was a ton of fun! In this photo the guy in the center foreground is Logan Hagege, then behind him are Marc Hanson in white, Ignat Ignatov in a sombrero, then maybe Ernesto Nemesio and Pete Khalil? The views were spectacular and the horses were a blast. We did spend teh rest of the day painting after out ride. It wasn’t all fun and games.
This was shot from halfway up a mountain on another horse ride at Holly and Mario’s rancho Sol Dorado. Another beautiful place to paint and see the scenery from a horse.
Looking down the hill to the cathedral in the center of San Miguel. I did a painting looking down this street. It was when I started feeling like I had wrapped my head around the different color palette and quirky perspective of always looking up or down hills. That paitnign is still at Frank’s gallery in San Miguel.
Thomas was one of the guides on our ride through the canyon. His family owns a wonderful ranch for painting and riding. If I remember right the name of the ranch is Xotolar.
The paintings we made on this trip will be shown in several venues. We already had an exhibition in San Miguel, while we were all down there at the Galeria Gardner. I’ve left a few paintings with Frank, so if you make it to San Miguel you should try to stop by his gallery right near the middle of town.
There awill also be a show at the Addison Gallery in Cape Cod, along with a show at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. There will be more to come about those shows.
The 15 artists on the trip were, Paul Shulenberg, Frank Gardner, Jeremy Lipking, Ignat Ignatov, Scott Burdick, Pete Khalil, Jerome Greene, Ernesto Nemesio, Logan Hagege, Jeff Bonasia, Kevin McNamara, Marc Hanson, Alexie Steele, Dan Corey, and me. Most of these guys have their own sites, wich are worth checking out. As I photograph the paintings I did on this trip I’ll post some more images.
