Boothbay Scenes...

This painting was done for a show I have coming up in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Dowling Walsh Gallery is putting together a show of my paintings at the Boothbay Harbor Botanical Gardens in November. I am painting to get ready for that show, and also preparing for a workshop in northern Maine that starts on Monday next week. Even though summer is over I still have plenty on my plate. I am trying to squeeze in lots of painting while warm days are still here. I will try to preview some of these Boothbay paintings on this blog as the show gets closer. It’s been fun checking out a new part of the state and finding some new scenes to paint.

Back to work...

Last week’s workshop was amazing. We all had a ton of fun and I think the students really grew in their painting. After relaxing at the beach this weekend it’s now time for me to get back to work and start taking advantage of the sun. I’m off to paint with two friends today, Jacobus Bass and David Lussier. It should be a lot of fun.

Workshop week...

This week I have been teaching a very full workshop. It is a 5 day workshop in Rockland Maine and it has been great. Workshops are always exhausting for me, and this has been no exception, but it has also been a very fun group to work with. We have had some variable weather conditions from misty fog to quick thunderstorms to perfect sunny days. Everyone has been working really hard and I’ve been happy to see their work growing during the week.

I think there are still some spaces left in my northern Maine workshop which begins in a week and a half. If you are interested you can check out the information on the Chewonki foundation website. They are hosting the workshop and doing all of the organizing. It should be a great workshop with a summer camp feel to the surroundings.

Monhegan, painting on Manana...

The last painting I did on this trip was not actually on Monhegan, but on the island next to it, Manana. Manana is just across the harbor and you can pay a guy to take you over on a boat. There is very little on that island, but it has some beautiful views and animals. When Elizabeth and I went over there we explored a bit and passed some goats on our way to this view looking down hill along a ravine that ends at the ocean. This view is the least recognizable as being in the Monhegan area, and it was also one of my favorites to work on.

This painting of Manana is 11×14″ and $950.

Monhegan, Dinghy on Fish Beach...

I really struggled with this painting for a while but I am thrilled with how it came out. It is really tricky to get the drawing on a dinghy just right, and then once I had everything sketched in, I had to figure out how to paint the type of light that I loved about this scene. This was also one of those painting locations where I spent a lot of time talking to people while I worked. It was exhausting, but well worth it in the end.

The painting above is 14×11″ and $950
