Schooners...

All summer these schooners are in and out of the harbor as they take people out for trips to the islands in Penobscot Bay. This spring I saw them getting the boats ready and took advantage of the time they spent docked in the harbor to paint them. It is always a fun challenge to try to get the shape of a boat sitting in water, and in this case to have each boat read with its own personality.

  2. great painting colin, love the little details and the cad red houses in the upper left. what size is this? 10×20?

  3. Once again I enjoy your color interpretation…as well as your attention to drawing. Super. I didn’t see a size on the mouse-over. Is this another 20×48?

Colin: you’re killing us with this stuff! How big and how much time did it take are the two questions that i have. Like it a lot. JA

    Hey Everyone,

Thanks so much. Glad you all like this one. I am not sure what the exact size is, but it is about 18×40″. And John, I don’t remember how long it took me, but i did the bulk of the work on site in one long day, and I went back to tweak a few more things again the next day, also on site. The challenge was working for so long that I had to deal with big changes in tide and light. But I tried to keep in mind my original idea and composition while I worked.

I really love this painting, Colin, especially having seen it in real life in your studio. The colors translate amazingly well online. It’s so vivid, and the colors and reflections are delightful.
