This is a quick 6×8″ study of the ocean during a recent storm. This was painted under an umbrella and standing as close as I could get without getting wet. At least that’s what I thought. As I finished up the painting and started packing up, a wave caught me by surprise and soaked me, my backpack, tripod… pretty much everything but my pochade box and the painting still on it. I had the presence of mind to at least try to save the painting that put me in this position. Everything has dried out now and is about as good as new, and I was reminded to never turn my back on the ocean. Plus I came out with this little stormscape. As small and loose as it is, I really like the brushwork and simplicity.

As fine as your brushwork is (and it is), I especially admire your restrained use of color.
Too bad you didn’t escape your comeuppance for your daring-do, but aren’t you a little bit glad you did turn your back? Makes for such a good salty caption for such a seaworthy little painting.
Effective work Colin.
Monet was said to have taken a dunking or two. Also, out of frustration, threw his easel and paints into the sea!
It reminds me of a Japanese print with its subdued color and simplicity of shape. Nice.
very good …the effect has come out well
nice one Colin – as a surfer I can just feel those swells and I also really like your color selection – these muted grey/greens/blues work really well together. it’s refreshing from the usual wave paintings out there that are saturated with turquoise, etc.
Keep coming back to this small sketch. Would you part with it? We have four of your paintings. Am loving your recent abstract direction as well. Amazing! Thanks. Susan
