These chairs are in a friend’s yard, and are fun to arrange into compositions. When I look for a painting in a scene like this I am trying to find the simplest organization of colors and values, and find a pleasing arrangement. The structure of this painting is in the simple design of values, but where it gets fun after that is playing with warm and cool shifts in the white chairs, and the different colors of reflected light; colors bouncing off the grass, the blue sky, and even light bouncing from the other chairs. This is a small 8×10″ painting, but even on that scale there is room for some exploration of the subject and careful observation of colors.

  1. Colin – this is great – I like how you just laid down that color and stuck with it, not going over it and over it. Like you said it’s simple and it just really works well – all the different angles can make some great compositions.

    Great little painting.

Soooo, if you can teach even a fraction of that in a week, I’ll be one really happy camper!! Another lovely painting Colin.

    Best….Suzanne

Nicely captured Colin. And let’s not forget that special Maine light!

  4. wicked awesome painting of a usually trite/sentimental subject (my take on adirondack chair paintings). This is more about great painting/composition/color and shape that happen to be chairs.
    Love it!
