I will pretty much try painting anything that interests me, but sometimes a certain subject will keep grabbing my attention. Lately that has been scenes of Maine’s rocky shore, and sometimes with waves crashing into it. This is a fun subject because it gives me a bit of realistic subject matter to depict, but leaves me a lot of flexibility to move things around and create a more interesting composition. There is always a certain amount of simplification I bring to painting a scene. I don’t want to get wrapped up in every detail. But I can take the scene into a more complex place by playing with color exaggeration, and layers of paint playing off each other. This 20×24″ painting is one I really enjoy, so right now I’m looking at how to make this a much larger studio piece. As I transition it to a larger painting, I’m also looking at more ways to push the color relationships.

nice light effect Colin!
You are an artist after my own heart. This has the feel of a small “daily painter” piece and it’s wonderful. Well done!
Nice, and I’m feeling the energy of the waves. I want to put a figure in there! lol
I can hear the waves crashing in. Gorgeous!
Thank you Colin
