The painting above was painted during the Maui Plein Air Invitational last week. I had a great time painting with a great group of artists. I am really proud that among such great painters, I was given the Artist’s Choice Award, and an Honorable Mention for the painting above. After a few previous trips to Maui, it was a real treat to stumble onto a new scene with so much color. I was initially drawn to the lanterns, the color of the house, and the bright canoes that lead the viewer into the scene. It was also a fun challenge to paint the palm fronds draped over the top of the foreground canoe.

As soon as I saw those bright canoes, Gauguin came to my mind straight away. No wonder why he settled in these paradise islands, and it is also no wonder why you got the artists choice award. just gorgeous! Thank you

Love your work! Love this one too!!

  3. Beautiful painting! Love the variety of color. Congratulations on this and your current show.

  4. Colin, I love this painting that won Artists Choice!! It was a pretty amazing time in Maui and all of your work was, of course, fabulous. I am so confused though…..I took a few pix of the painting that had both your prize ribbons next to it…and THIS ONE was NOT the one with the ribbons next to it!!! After bragging about your having won everything (!) when I got back to Chicago, a fellow artist and CP admirer explained that the pix I had shown her of your winning painting ~ was NOT the winner!!! That ‘Return From Paradise’ was the winner!! Help?

    Hi Corinne,

Sorry for the confusion. The painting in this post, of the outrigger canoe in a front yard, is the one that won the prizes. But this painting sold on Friday night, so Saturday morning, we all hung new paintings to replace sold ones. When I put up the new paintings, I tried to move the ribbons off to the side a bit more, so they wouldn’t be associated with one of the new paintings, but it was still not clear. I wanted to leave the ribbons up, even though the painting that received the awards had been sold and taken away. I hope this helps explain it.
