This is a 16×20″ canvas painted recently in Rockport harbor. One thing I love about this harbor is how many trees surround the water. It makes for a great backdrop of deep greens, and is especially nice when the water is reflective. When the wind is still, the boats float in a sea of deep olives, browns and greens, occasionally interrupted by a ripple of ultramarine. In this painting I wanted to pay close attention to the variety of blues in the hulls of the white lobster boats, while also making the boats stand out from the verdant green surroundings. I’m also always looking fro places where I can let my brushwork play a bit more, without losing the structure of the image. The greens behind the boat provided lots of opportunity for that.
