I’ve been painting for a few hours and I’m getting pretty tired so I figured I would take a break to ramble on here for a bit. First of all, I’ll share a link to a really fun website if you’re a color nut like me.
I’ve been going on this site lately trying to find ideas for the color scheme on my website. I’m in the middle of a redesign of my website with my friend Doug, and I’m totally overwhelmed by the abilit to choose any color combination I want. With limitless choices I became paralyzed, so I started looking through the Kuler site for inspiration, or just a bit of direction. I’m really happy with the site I already have, but Doug wants to change a few things and while we’re at it, this seemed like a good time to think about the color scheme I’ve had for a few years now. Anyway, this is a fun site to find interesting color relationships.
As for painting, I’ve been getting a bit of work done. I managed to salvage a troubled painting yesterday afternoon. Plus I have been able to paint outside a few times. Below is the only successful painting from working outside.

Thanks for posting this, it’s a nice painting. Good use of compliments and delicious brush work. What would you say the ratio of successful outdoor paintings was for you?
Hi Simon,
My success rate changes quite a bit. I go through days of making paintings that are all disappointing, but I also have runs where I feel like everything I touch works out. I would guess that throughout a year, I am fairly happy with more than half the plein air paintings I do outside. Maybe two-thirds are keepers? Hard to say. But even within that, there is a much smaller amount that I end up falling in love with. I know this is a vague answer, but it’s a tough question. There are also times of year when I want to just try something new with my work, so I’ll go out and make alot of bad paintings, not expecting to be successful, but trying to figure out some problem.
Thanks for getting in touch.
