M/V Monhegan...

I’ve been painting in Rockland a lot this spring, and I’ve been finding a lot of interesting subject matter in the working waterfront. The subject of the painting above grabbed my attention for the way the blues of the boat played off of warm shadows and sometimes created a vibration. I also like how busy this image is; the way your eye can bounce all over the canvas finding little moments of interest.

  1. Great sketch. In the name of the ship used Simultaneous colour contrast.

great painting! I dont believe you pulled it off… ok I had a feeling you would but this reads so good.

  3. I like this. I’ve tried hard to reproduce the sky colour for my own use. The nearest I’ve got (I realise that monitors can be difficult) is Manganese blue with white and a little touch of either winsor or lemon yellow. Can I ask how you mixed it please?

With a sky color like that I’m usually using pthalo green, tinted with a bit of lemon yellow, But sometimes I push it back the other way toward the blue with some ultramarine. The sky is rarely a uniform color though, so those are the base colors, and then I look for subtle changes in the sky color.

    Hi Bruce,

I like to use some pthalo green in my skies. This was probably pthalo green and titanium white adn a bit of lemon yellow. But I will make little tweaks all over the place to make the sky color vary.

    Hope that’s helpful. Good luck.
