Working on the workshop

Friday August 8, 2008

I’m on my way out the door to go teach my first painting workshop. I’ve had some scattered experience teaching in different situations, but not with this amount of responsibility so I’m a bit nervous. I think it’ll actually be alot of fun once we’re painting. Tonight we’re loading up the boat that’ll take us to some islands in the morning to start painting. Today has been a whirlwind of preparation getting stuff packed and trying to bring alot of extras in case people forget something. Hopefully I didn’t forget some supplies myself!

I don’t have any paintings to share with you, but I will show some photos of yesterday’s project, which was to build a box for storing wet paintings. We’re all working on panels, so I made a box that has grooves on the sides to slide the panles into. It’s fairly light when empty, but you throw in 40 canvas panels and that thing ways a ton. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the weekend and wish for sunny skies and light winds in Maine. Let’s keep dry, keep painting, and keep our food down while on the boat!!!

In progress with some clamps holding tight.

Finished, except for some handles I put on this morning.

My favorite studio innovation, which you can barely see here, is raising the table legs on top of gesso cans so I don’t have to bend over when I’m working on stuff. Im 6’7” so it’s a real pain having to bend over workspaces all the time.
